PHOTOBLOG: “Naked Man” Festival

Images of the famous ‘Naked Man’ Festival in Hida-Furukawa, the town just north of Takayama. This festival took place about 10 days ago, and it was incredibly cold out for mid-April, and actually it snowed the following night!. The men are not really naked, but are only clothed in shorts combined with a cotton cloth around their stomachs. Check it out:

[ABOVE] Neighborhood & townspeople light the streets by carrying paper lanterns in a procession ahead of the taiko drums.

[ABOVE] The large taiko drum is on the right, and the men from each neighborhood battle to get their small drum to the front of the crowd. Plenty of sake contributes to the chaos and excitement.
